Whitby Plus Abbey

Continued from Part 3

On Wednesday, we woke up, had our usual full-English breakfast downstairs at the hotel restaurant, got ready for the day and set off on our adventures. On this day, we travelled North to Whitby, through the North Yorkshire Moors, arriving late morning. The moors were beautiful in the morning, it was like driving through a background from Sharpe or Poldark.

First, we took a walk along the beach then to the end of the pier. As the weather was nice and it was a clear day, you could see for miles and miles; the view was amazing.

In Whitby town centre, we saw lots of seagulls feasting on other people’s fish and chips as we made our way up the steep hill to the Abbey at the top. At any point on the long road, you could see the entire bay below.

We passed a man playing a fiddle, singing songs about wenches, and a café called ‘Tiffin’, which I remember sending to Dad, asking him for some of his signature tiffin upon our return home!

When we reached the top of the hill, there was a big graveyard overlooking the bay, with the Abbey in the background. It was a very picturesque area, no matter which way you looked it was beautiful. The Abbey itself stood proudly atop the hill.

There was so much of the Abbey to capture, but here are a few of my favourite images:

After Whitby, we drove the scenic route back to the hotel, stopping in at Thirsk for a quick drink on the way. Thirsk was a lovely little town, with the centre nearly entirely cobbled, with shops and pubs all looking in to a large plaza. We had a quick drink at The Golden Fleece, visited the local independent book store, then made our way back to the hotel for the evening.
