Today we learnt that a huge number of the roads around and heading away from Dublin were built in the last 10 years, so according to the satnav in my car we spent most of the day driving through fields! Since it’s Helen’s birthday today, we started by visiting an Inglot shop (a high-end makeup brand) in Ireland’s largest shopping centre (that’s about a quarter of the size of the Trafford Centre for comparison).

Dublin, Our First Trip to Ireland

Our first trip abroad together (and my first time abroad in well over a decade) started with a drive to Holyhead in Anglesey, a short ferry ride across to Dublin, and a quick loop around Dublin to our hotel. The ferry was small but fast (only taking around 2.5 hours to cross the Irish Sea), the water was very calm, but out on deck it was extremely windy!

Exeter Cathedral, Tintagel Castle, and Getting Engaged!

Following a three-hour drive down to Devon on the Thursday evening, we finally arrived at the hotel around 10pm. We grabbed a quick drink in the bar, but got to bed fairly quickly as we were both tired from the journey. The room was amazing, they gave us the bridal suite (I told Helen they must’ve given us an upgrade as I only booked a standard suite online).

Kilmarnock and Crossraguel Abbey

On Monday morning, we woke up nice and early again, got another hearty breakfast, and set off to explore. First stop was Kilmarnock, a slightly larger town than Ayr just a short drive North. The town wasn’t very nice itself, it was fairly run-down with a lot of empty shops. There was some fairly interesting graffiti around though.
