Our Honeymoon in the Lake District

Arrival Date: 2017-05-28
Departure Date: 2017-06-01
Accommodation: Lakeside Hotel, Lake Windermere

For our honeymoon, we chose to visit the Lake District for a few nights. A different kind of break to our usual sightseeing holidays, we wanted somewhere easy and relaxing, to take in the countryside and recover after all the excitement of the wedding.

We woke up on the Sunday morning – a married couple – in The Vicarage, got ready for the day and headed downstairs for breakfast. We met up with some of the guests from the night before, had an amazing breakfast, then got packed and headed up to the lakes. Just under 2 hours later, we arrived at our hotel. Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we had spot of lunch and explored the area a little.

After lunch our room was ready, so we checked in and found the best hotel room we’ve visited to date. All the rooms were big, the lounge had a chaise in and looked straight out on to Lake Windermere with a private decking. The view was incredible, and since the room was apart from the hotel, sitting out on the decking was so peaceful and serene. We even got our own private sauna, and a congratulatory cake!

Happy with our accommodation, we did a little more exploring, then had dinner, and relaxed in the room for the rest of the day with our books.

The next day, Monday, among eating some amazing food, we took the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam train that was right next to the hotel. Helen hadn’t been on a steam engine before, so we went a couple of stops up and down the River Leven, taking in the scenery.

On the Tuesday, we visited the local aquarium, which again was right next to the hotel, aptly named Lakes Aquarium. It’s not as big as somewhere like Hull or Blue Planet, but it was still impressive for a little building tucked away on the South side of Lake Windermere, with lots of very colourful fish.

In the afternoon, we finally started getting restless with our surroundings, it’s hard for us to stay put and relax on holiday since we much prefer to go out exploring. We took a trip up to Windermere, then back round to Kendal, which is a beautiful town. We visited Farrers, a local coffee specialist, to get some local coffee as a souvenir for the parents, then walked down along the River Kent, and up hill to Kendal Castle, which looks over Kendal itself and the whole surrounding area. Once again, more incredible views!

In the evening, we went out to The Mason’s Arms for some dinner, a little country pub recommended to us by Glynn, our Master of Ceremonies at the Wedding. It was the best burger I’ve ever had, and the best pie Helen’s had, we can’t recommend this place enough! You know it’s good when it’s not only packed full, but all the outside tables were also full even though it was raining! Once again, the view from here were stunning, and the road between the hotel and the pub looked back down on to Lake Windermere, where we could see our hotel too.

On the Wednesday, we booked ourselves some massages at the spa, and once again just chilled out around the hotel, though Helen “accidentally” stole my massage and had a nice two-hour session to herself while I sat in the lobby engrossed in a book waiting for them to call me in. She says it was an accident, but we all know the truth!

On the Thursday we headed home sufficiently rested, picked the cats up from the cattery, then started to settle in to married life together.
