Continued from Part 3…
Today’s entry will be a quick one as we had a bit of a rest day. We drove up to Ilfracombe after our usual breakfast for a walk around by the harbour, the town was very nice but most of the shops and cafés were closed. We saw a very odd statue at the head of the harbour that was completely unexplained (no plaques or anything anywhere), it seemed to be a giant pregnant woman with half of her skin missing.
Sufficiently freaked out by this modern-day Poseidon, we walked back around the harbour and found the only fudge shop open on the wharf; Roly’s Fudge, so we had to buy a couple of small bags. Then before we set off back up the hill to the car, we stopped in at Adele’s Café for some cream teas; the scones were delicious even though the café smelt of burnt toast a little.
Once back at the car, we checked up on the next few places we wanted to visit, only to find all four of our ideas were closed either on a Monday or for the Winter, so we decided to take a scenic drive back to Exeter and have a chilled-out afternoon.
In the evening, we went to El Bocado, an independent Tapas bar in Exeter. The food was delicious, and service was great even though there seemed to only be a single staff member working. We got given a free shot of mushroom soup, then filled ourselves up with a lovely selection of Spanish dishes.
We then retired back to the hotel, stopping by the restaurant for some dessert before heading up to the room to relax before bed. Like I said, not too much to share today, but yet another day with lots of driving!
Ah, the bump on the beach! That’s a Damien Hirst sculpture that caused a load of controversy when it first arrived. I don’t like it.
Sounds like you are finding some lovely eateries on your travels.
Hmmm! Pregnant women, fudge and tapas. You know how to live!
